Proof of stake since 2022. Validators stake 32 ETH; EIP-1559 burns the base fee, so net issuance can go negative when the network is busy.
What it is used for
Anything programmable: DeFi, stablecoins, NFTs, L2 settlement. Gas costs rise with demand, which is why most activity has moved to rollups.
