Why exchanges block whole countries

Operating in a country usually means holding a licence there, and licences bring capital requirements, reporting obligations and liability. Rather than comply everywhere, most offshore exchanges simply geoblock the jurisdictions with the strictest regimes — the US above all, then the UK and Canada for derivatives, then whichever markets have recently tightened rules.

On using a VPN

It technically works until it does not. Exchanges detect VPN use through payment rails, device fingerprints and behaviour, and when they do, accounts are frozen during withdrawal review — the worst possible moment. Circumventing a geoblock also breaches the terms you agreed to, which removes most of your recourse if something goes wrong. If an exchange does not serve your country, the honest answer is to use one that does.
