The first cryptocurrency and the only one with no founder, no company and no ongoing issuance decisions left to make.
How it works
Proof of work. Miners compete to add blocks; difficulty adjusts every 2,016 blocks to hold the ten-minute average. Supply is capped at 21 million, with the block subsidy halving roughly every four years.
What it is used for
Settlement and a reserve asset. Slow and expensive for small payments by design — the Lightning Network exists to work around that.
